Chenille, the French word for caterpillar or loop, is typically used to describe a type of fabric. In the embroidery business it refers to a method which the thread is stitched on fabric and results a looped pile like what you often see on a carpet.

A chenille patch is typically composed of three components – from top to bottom:the the chenille embroidery, a piece of scrim-felt through which the chenille has been embroidered, and a scrim-felt base or foundation on which the finished chenille is mounted. With some imagination you can produce a colorful chenille patch which matches your jacket trim.
